One of the best criminal justice careers is with the Drug Enforcement Administration as a DEA Special Agent. At least I think so. The US Drug Enforcement Administration is seeking drug enforcement agents continuously and many agents I spoke with, tell me that there is nothing else out there they would rather do. Additionally, in their perspective, it is one of the most exciting federal agencies out there.
If you are considering a career in federal law enforcement, DEA could be a great match for you. However, in order to be qualified for a position as a drug enforcement agent you must first obtain your bachelors degree. Your bachelors degree doesn’t have to necessarily be from a criminal justice program. It can also be from accounting, business, or information technology. Truthfully, a lot of bachelor degrees would qualify. However, college degrees that are closely related to business and sociology are definitely a better match.
If you have a graduate degree closely related to what the DEA is looking for, then you should be fine getting on the team. Moreover, if you speak foreign languages your desirability level is much higher. Languages like Russian, Arabic, Farsi, Spanish, Portuguese, and many others are highly in demand.
From what I know, surveillance is one of the most important factors for apprehending criminals in the Drug Enforcement Agency. Investigative techniques are also used in order to keep drugs off of the streets.
It can be a dangerous job, at times, and it requires you to carry a weapon. When reading the requirements of a future DEA agent I stumbled upon a very important piece of information. In the past years, this information was not readily visible, as the agency assumed that the applicant would know what the job entailed. It is a statement of caution, which informs applicants that there is a possibility of bodily harm and that situations may arise where you may have to take someone else’s life. This career option is not for the squeamish, but it is rewarding and can be very fun.
If you don’t have your bachelor’s degree or a master’s degree, the concept of online education should not elude your mind. Obtaining your criminal justice degree online, or any of the aforementioned degrees, is a very good move. Granted, you will go to a reputable institution with an accredited program, you can complete the entire degree online in a matter of 12 to 36 months.
