Between the 1970s and 1990s IRA has orchestrated numerous terrorist attacks killing their adversaries, government officials, police officers, soldiers, and Catholics who worked for compromise. Their main tactic was the use of bombs, and some splinter groups of the IRA became very knowledgeable on the use of explosives, hence becoming master bombers.
The IRA used other techniques to terrorize, such as: kidnappings and murders which were conducive to their bombing campaigns. With time, their expertise allowed them to attack government buildings and vehicles with the use of time sensitive bombs. Additionally they started killing British citizens with less discretion then previously.
Times have changed for the IRA, and at present, even the most loyal extremists find it tiresome to terrorize (White, 2006 p. 204).
